During this period there was no running water for the church. The church had to get water from a nearby well that belonged to Bro. George Ellis. There were no indoor restrooms. The church was using out-houses. The church was heated with potbelly heaters. Later, Florida Power Company came into existence. It provided electrical services for the church. Then, Talquin Electric Corp. was organized and took over the electrical services.
Under the leadership of Rev. J. C. Sanders during the years of 1965 - 1974, two young men and older members of the church came to the forefront with a vision for Springfield. Their names were Bro. Wallace Ellis, Bro. Charlie Dilworth, Sr., Bro. John B. Smith, Sr., Bro. Fred Harris, Bro. Cornelius Harris, Bro. Willie Thomas, Sis. Mabel Pinkney, Sis. Marjorie Jackson, and Sis. Mable Harris. They were not satisfied with the progress and spiritual development of the church. They came to the conclusion that changes had to be made if Springfield A.M.E. Church was to be a vital part of a growing and changing society. They challenged the church about its spiritual growth, giving of services without pay, and the income of the church.
Many thought that these were things that were untouchable and unthinkable about doing anything about. Nevertheless, they challenged the establishment of the church. Many believed that changes would destroy the church. Times were changing and the church was on the move and ready for change. These sweeping changes that were about to occur would change Springfield A.M.E. Church and put it in touch with other churches. A prayer service was initiated and put into action in the church. They realized that much prayer was needed. Many were disappointed and displeased with the changes that took place. Through the power of prayers, the changes that took place at Springfield A.M.E. Church gave rise for the church to grow and prosper. Since that time Springfield A.M.E. Church has continued to grow and play a vital role in the Gretna Community and the Conference.
The present structure, which sits so majestically on this site, was constructed under the leadership of Rev. J. C. Sanders. This church was constructed during the year of 1973. The contractor was Mr. Selmo B. Bradley. The architect was Mr. Edward Clark. Due to an oversight, the cornerstone was not laid until 1976 under the leadership of Rev. J.M. Proctor, and the following trustees: Bro. Wallace Ellis, Bro. Cornelius Harris, Bro. Fred Harris, Bro. Willie Thomas, Sis. Mabel Pinkney, Bro. John B. Smith, Sr., Sis. Mable Harris and Sis. Marjorie Jackson.
The mortgage for this great church was liquidated under the leadership of Dr. J. L. Byrd. ln 1989, an annex was added to the church under the leadership of Rev. Tony Hannah. Many individuals labored hard during the restructuring of the old church that was burned. Some of the great stewards and trustees during this era were: Brothers Jimmy Jackson, George Ellis, George Goodson, Albert Hinson, Willie Thomas, Wesley Ellis and Luther Smith.

We must not let their spirits and devotions die.
